Do you ever notice people walking down the street with certain facial expressions? Frowns, smiles, sneers? Next time you're in public, look around and try to guess what mood people are in, just by the looks on their face. I don't mean to say you'll get it right everytime or that we should judge others by what we think their emotions are, but the fact that our facial expressions are a reflection of what's going on inside of us is something we should be aware of. Anger, frustration, fear, confusion, are expressions that are easy to pick up on from a mile away, as well as joy, gladness, and grief.
Our facial expressions are so connected to our emotions that it is nearly impossible to separate the two. Try smiling while angry, or frowning while feeling blissful. It's as if the expression will always come a split second after the emotion.
It might sound silly but I spend a reasonable amount of time smiling big at myself in the mirror. It lets my brain and therefore my body know that I am doing well. Tell me a story while smiling big. I bet you'll start giggling within a few seconds. They say laughing is one of the healthiest things we can do. I mean, at the end of it all isn't it about optimizing our health and well being? Shouldn't that be one of our goals, to cultivate and refine the connection we have to our surroundings in order to live a happy and healthy life?
What if it did start with the facial expression we are carrying with us everywhere we go, while driving, when entering a room, while ordering our food? What if our smiles could open doors of opportunity?
What are you expressing with your face? What are you attracting with your facial expressions? What are you telling the world without verbally saying anything? Lets be aware of emotions, thoughts, and facial expressions.
